FAQs

Cross-border structuring of legal entities abroad raises legitimate questions: legality, costs, timelines, compliance and long-term sustainability. Below, you will find clear answers to the most common questions we receive from founders, investors and international professionals who are considering or managing multi-entity structures through Startaway.

Q1
What is a company abroad, an offshore, and how does it differ from the Startaway model?
Historically, the expressions "company abroad" and "offshore company" referred to the same basic idea: a legal entity incorporated in a jurisdiction different from that of its partners or controllers. The term offshore comes from British English ("off shore"), originally meaning "beyond the coast (of the United Kingdom)".

Over time, however, usage evolved. In modern legal and financial practice, offshore ceased to be a purely geographic descriptor and became a functional one. Today, it is frequently used to describe companies established in jurisdictions that offer recognised tax, regulatory or structural advantages — often in the context of international tax planning, asset protection or cross-border structuring.

The model developed by Startaway reflects this functional evolution. Instead of offering strategies made up of a single company "abroad", Startaway designs and implements multi-layer, multi-jurisdictional structures, composed of two, three or more interconnected entities, each with a defined legal and tax role — collectively called "frameworks" (a strategy and its component organisational structures).

A typical framework may include, for example, an operating or trading company in one jurisdiction, an intellectual-property or R&D holding in another, and an asset-holding or ownership layer above them — as mentioned, integrated through a pre-defined tax and governance strategy.

For this reason, comparisons based only on the price of a single incorporation are misleading. Startaway does not offer isolated entities, but complete structural systems, including registrations, strategic design and unified management tools. What is delivered is not a company abroad, but a coordinated legal architecture.
Q2
Is it illegal to maintain companies abroad?
No. In most jurisdictions, there is no illegality in owning or maintaining a company incorporated outside one's country of tax residence. The same principle generally applies to holding foreign assets — such as real estate, vehicles or vessels — or financial rights, including shares and securities.

What exists in most countries is a legal obligation of disclosure and reporting, often known as CFC (Controlled Foreign Corporation) rules. In simple terms, the owner of a company abroad may have to declare the existence of the entity, its accounts and its income to the tax authorities of their country.

In Brazil, for example, since 2023, tax residents must declare their companies (as provided for by Law 14.754) in the IRPF Return, and must also file the Brazilian Capital Abroad Declaration (CBE) when assets exceed USD 1,000,000.00.

We recommend that you talk to us or directly to your accountant about the best tax and reporting strategy in your country.
Q3
Where are my Startaway companies registered?
Although the Startaway Platform gives access to jurisdictions such as Canada, the USA (Florida, Delaware, New Mexico, Montana, Nevada, New York and Wyoming), England, Estonia, Hong Kong and Nevis — jurisdictions with stable legislation, predictable tax systems and business-friendly environments — Startaway maintains the standard frameworks (called "presets") presented on this page, representing ideal solutions for most cases (with options concentrated in the US and UK).

But case-by-case analysis is essential to define the best strategy to meet your objectives. For example, many American states and several Caribbean jurisdictions do not require taxes from companies that receive revenues from abroad. In other cases, European jurisdictions may offer more suitable frameworks for intellectual property, management and compliance. The Startaway platform guides the selection based on the purpose of each layer and the defined strategy.
Q4
When is it worth registering a structure with Startaway?
A structure is typically worth implementing when the economic and operational benefits clearly exceed its maintenance costs.

Startaway structures generally range from approximately USD 110 per month for a single-entity U.S. setup to around USD 440 per month for more complex, multi-jurisdictional investment structures. As a practical guideline, the simplest structures start to make sense from around USD 132,000 in annual revenue, while the most complete structures typically require a minimum of around USD 520,000 in annual revenue — so that structural costs tend to represent roughly 1% of income.

Beyond direct tax efficiency, Startaway structures also provide measurable non-fiscal advantages, including reduced administrative friction, improved access to multi-currency financial systems, asset and risk segregation, and greater operational and financial flexibility.

In short, Startaway becomes relevant when scale, complexity, or cross-border exposure make informal or single-entity setups inefficient or risky.
Q5
What is necessary to register and maintain a Startaway structure?
You are not required to speak foreign languages or travel to the jurisdictions where your entities are incorporated. All registrations and ongoing management are handled through the Startaway Platform.

To begin, you simply create an account, complete the required forms, and upload standard compliance documentation, including a valid passport, proof of residence, and identity verification (selfie). The annual fees cover the formation, statutory maintenance, and operational support necessary to keep the structure active and compliant.

For clients who require additional guidance, Startaway works with a curated network of legal and tax professionals who can assist in designing and validating a structure aligned with your specific objectives.
Q6
When will my Startaway Multinational be operational?
Typical processing times vary depending on the jurisdictions involved and the type of entities included in the structure. In many cases, initial incorporation documents for entities such as a US LLC or a UK LLP are issued within approximately 48 hours.

However, full operational readiness may require additional steps. Tax identification numbers—such as a US EIN or a UK UTR are typically issued within 15 to 40 business days, depending on the jurisdiction and the authorities involved. All timelines are estimates, not guaranteed deadlines.
Q7
Why choose Startaway instead of competitors?
Startaway does not treat company formation as a standalone commodity — formation is one component of a broader managed international structure. Unlike the so-called "(Offshore) Company Formation" companies (such as Globalfy or Stripe Atlas), which deliver isolated incorporations, Startaway is a startup (in the "legal-techs" sector) that offers clients and partners a technology platform designed to develop, build and manage legal strategies/structures (operating companies, holding vehicles and investment vehicles) across multiple layers and jurisdictions, in a single environment interconnected with the main market operators (government bodies, financial institutions and corporate infrastructure providers).

Therefore, unlike traditional providers focused on standalone incorporations, Startaway delivers complex solutions, designed (by experienced consultants, lawyers or accountants) around a personalised legal and tax strategy, with attention at a "private" level. Note, for example, that — given the level of dedication of our partners — Startaway keeps only 600 slots for the English-language market, allowing direct communication between each client and their consultant. Services are not provided to residents of the United States, the United Kingdom, the member states of the European Union, Canada, China (including Hong Kong and Macao) or Saint Kitts and Nevis in their own jurisdictions.

Finally, choose Startaway if you are looking for: (i) personalised operational and/or wealth strategies, transnational (across more than one country) with scalable presets (e.g. an operating company in the US and a holding in the UK); (ii) full execution of registrations, maintenance, compliance and support with an all-inclusive annual fee (everything included); (iii) an easy, unified digital platform for visibility, documentation and management.

In short, we do not sell "companies": we deliver complete international strategies, with assisted operation and centralised control.

About Startaway

The Startaway Technology Platform was created in 2023 to help startups and entrepreneurs manage their cross-border businesses, offering infrastructure, organisational registrations and tax support in different jurisdictions. In 2024, founded under the management of the US company InFolk Business, Startaway also began serving affluent clients with a focus on wealth management, incorporating more sophisticated solutions such as holdings, investment vehicles and multi-layered structures, alongside an extensive network of partners specialising in global corporate and wealth strategies — wealth managers, tax planners, consultants, lawyers and accountants.

In 2025, Startaway received its first capital investment and joined the Canadian S&F Holdings, strengthening its institutional backing and accelerating its development as infrastructure for cross-border managers, tax planners, accountants and legal consultants. But in 2026, in a move uncommon in the cross-border business-management market, Startaway chose the opposite path to most platforms: reduce its scale to increase proximity.

After reaching hundreds of partners and thousands of users, we deliberately reduced the number of clients — limited to 3,000 across the six regions served — so that we could offer a truly private service: we want to know our clients by name, their stories, their businesses and their projects — and to build relationships with them that go far beyond a platform. Our consulting team is now concentrated in six professionals, distributed across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, providing service in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian and Italian — get in touch with your personal consultant and schedule a visit. We enjoy welcoming our clients in person, showing them our region and, simply, going out to talk about their plans and projects!

The Startaway of today is therefore smaller by choice and closer by design.

Management 2025-2030
